WHAT IS SOMATIC EDUCATION?
Thomas Hanna defined somatics as "...the field of study dealing with somatic phenomena, i.e., the
human being as experienced by himself (or herself) from the inside." He defined soma as the body
experienced from within.
I studied BioSomatics and Hanna Somatics with Carol Welch in the early 1990's and have continued to
practice and develop the work since then. Visit the Somatics website for more information. I also have
continued to study and enjoy Feldenkrais and I highly recommend this work.
A typical session begins with massage and movement explorations. Once we get a sense of where the
work should go, the focus is to introduce and induce easy movement - as efficiently and painlessly as
possible, within the structural and physiological limitations of the individual. We extend the comfort
range by moving the limbs gently to release the muscles and breath. In an area that is habitually
"stuck" and painful, we apply a series of "pandiculations" - interactive movement with biofeedback - to
"wake them up" and "re-mind" them of their full movement potential.
The approach "re-sets the resting length of muscles" and integrates the updated movement options
into the whole soma. By getting chronically contracted muscles mobilized, conditions like low back
pain, Frozen Shoulders, Sciatica and Chronic Pain can be quickly relieved and often completely
alleviated, in as few as one or two sessions.
An easy to do self-maintenance program is also designed, specific to individual needs, in order to
optimize any benefits gained in the table or floor session. This provides viable options for easy
movement before the pain of tight muscles causes the holding and inhibition that later freezes into
chronic pain.
